The General Report on Italy's Economy (called RGE) is a document envisaged by Law No. 639 of 21 August 1949 as later amended. It is submitted to Parliament by the end of March and is traditionally considered a planning document, as it assesses the impact of Government policies.
The RGE illustrates macroeconomic and public finance final data relating to the previous year and highlights the main results achieved. Furthermore, it provides a sectoral analysis of GDP composition and income distribution, and it examines the financial resources available and how they are used, as well as labour market, education, pensions, health care, and economic trends in macro areas of the country. Within public finance, the RGE analyses the results achieved by the State and general government entities. The RGE also contains the main international macroeconomic indicators.
The current structure of the RGE was developed in 1993. The document includes three sections concerning: i) economic developments in Italy and abroad; ii) sectoral analysis; and iii) statistical annexes to the first two volumes.
Law No. 639 of 21 August 1949 stipulated that the report shall be submitted by the end of March. However, the above Law No. 639 was repealed by Law No. 196 of 31 December 2009 (Art. 51, p. 1, b) which envisaged that the Ministry of the Economy and Finance shall submit the RGE to Parliament by the end of April (Art. 12, p. 7).
