The European Union: a new geopolitical entity

The European Union recently experienced an unprecedented expansion. In fact, on 1st May 2004, ten new Countries became EU members (Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Hungary), and from 1st January 2007, Bulgaria and Romania will join the EU. The accession negotiations with Croatia and Turkey started in October 2005.

In order to gain membership, Countries candidate to accession must meet the political and economic conditions known as the “Copenhagen Criteria", which stipulate that new Member States of the EU have to put into effect proper procedures in order to adopt the Acquis Communautaire (the EU’s body of laws, regulations and legal principles). The Twinning Projects have been conceived and established to this
